Tree Surgeons in Detling

Our yard is in Detling, so your trees are on our doorstep

Most tree surgeons who cover Detling are driving in from somewhere else. We aren’t. Maidstone Tree Surgeons is based on Hockers Lane in Detling, and our nearest green waste site is in the Detling area too. That means shorter travel, less time lost on the road and waste that doesn’t have to go far once it leaves your garden. For you, it means a local team that knows the village, the lanes and the kind of trees that grow at the foot of the North Downs.

Connor, Ethan and Ben carry out everything from a single overgrown conifer to full garden and site clearances across Detling, Thurnham, Boxley and the surrounding villages. Our arborists are NPTC and City & Guilds qualified, and we work to BS 3998:2010, the British Standard for tree work.

Tree surgery for Detling homes and gardens

Detling is a village of contrasts. There are cottages and period houses along The Street, newer homes towards the edge of the village and larger properties with long gardens, paddocks and field boundaries running up towards the Downs. Each brings its own tree work:

  • Mature trees that have outgrown the garden. Oaks, ash, beech and sycamore planted decades ago can start to overshadow houses, block light and drop heavy limbs. A crown reduction or crown thinning keeps the tree while bringing its size and weight back under control.
  • Low branches over drives, lanes and lawns. Crown lifting removes the lowest limbs to give clearance for vehicles, mowers and pedestrians and lets more light into the garden.
  • Trees that need to come down. When a tree is dead, dangerous or simply in the wrong place, our tree removal service takes it down safely in sections where space is tight, and we leave the site clean.
  • Stumps left behind. Our stump grinding service grinds the stump below ground level so you can re-turf, plant or build over the area.
  • Deadwood and storm damage. Deadwood removal takes out dead and dying branches before they fall on a roof, car or path.

Hedges, boundaries and overgrown land

Hedges are a big part of the landscape around Detling. The Kent Downs landscape assessment describes the foot of the scarp here as large fields “divided by luxuriant hedgerows”, and the Pilgrims’ Way that runs east out of the village is lined with thick hedges for much of its length. Plenty of local gardens have the same: long boundary hedges of laurel, leylandii, beech or mixed native species that quickly get away from you.

We offer hedge trimming and shaping to keep hedges dense and tidy, and hedge removal where a boundary needs replacing. We plan hedge work around the bird nesting season. See our guide on when to cut hedges to avoid nesting birds.

For paddocks, overgrown plots and land being prepared for building or landscaping, our site clearance and vegetation management service clears scrub, brambles, self-sown trees and stumps in one visit, and we take the waste away as a registered waste carrier.

Detling Conservation Area, TPOs and the Kent Downs

Before any tree work in Detling, it’s worth checking whether your trees are protected.

Detling Conservation Area. The historic heart of the village is a conservation area. Maidstone Borough Council’s appraisal describes it as covering the whole of The Street, from the Hockers Lane junction up to the A249 at Detling Hill, plus a short stretch east along the Pilgrims’ Way. In a conservation area, any tree with a stem more than 75mm in diameter at 1.5m above ground is automatically protected. You need to give Maidstone Borough Council six weeks’ notice before pruning or removing it.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). Some trees outside the conservation area are protected by a TPO. Work on these needs consent from the council, and the application takes up to eight weeks. The council’s online map shows whether a tree is protected.

Kent Downs National Landscape. Detling sits at the foot of the North Downs scarp, and much of the parish lies within the Kent Downs National Landscape, formerly the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The landscape around the village matters, and sensible, well-planned tree work helps keep it that way.

We’ll tell you at the quote stage if your trees are likely to be protected, and we can help you prepare the notice or application. Our guide Do I need permission to cut down a tree in Maidstone? explains the rules in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission for tree work in Detling?

It depends where the tree is. If it’s in the Detling Conservation Area and has a stem over 75mm in diameter at 1.5m above ground, you must give Maidstone Borough Council six weeks’ notice. If it has a Tree Preservation Order, you need the council’s consent first. We can check this for you when we quote.

Can you quote without visiting?

Often, yes. Send us photos or a short video on WhatsApp, or ask about a live video quote. As our yard is in Detling, we can also pop round to look in person if the job needs it.

Do you take the waste away?

Yes. We’re a registered waste carrier and the cuttings, logs and chip leave with us. Just let us know if you’d like to keep any logs.

What happens if a tree comes down in a storm?

Call or WhatsApp us straight away. We offer 24/7 emergency call-outs to make trees safe and clear blocked drives, roads and gardens.
