Tree Surgeons in Grove Green

Expert care for big trees in modern gardens

Grove Green is a modern estate with a long history. It was built on part of the old Vinters House estate, on land that was once the estate’s market farm, and the name itself is old. A 1921 study of place names classed “Grove Green” as a woodland name. Some of that woodland is still here. Grove Wood, a small remnant of the ancient woodland cleared to build the estate, is mostly sweet chestnut, and the Vinters Valley Nature Reserve is close by.

That mix of new homes and older trees is what makes tree work in Grove Green different. Many gardens are compact, but the trees beside them can be big and mature, and close to houses, fences, parking bays and footpaths. Maidstone Tree Surgeons is based just up the road in Detling, so Grove Green is right on our doorstep.

Tall trees, small gardens: the typical Grove Green job

On an estate like this, the job is rarely “fell the tree”. More often it’s about keeping a good tree while making it work beside a house:

  • Crown reduction and thinning to reduce height and spread, let light into gardens and conservatories, and keep branches off roofs and gutters. See crown reduction and crown thinning.
  • Crown lifting over driveways, parking areas and footpaths, so cars, vans and pedestrians can get past safely. See crown lifting.
  • Deadwood removal from mature trees on the boundary with woodland or open space. See deadwood removal.
  • Sectional tree removal where a tree is dead, dangerous or simply too big for the garden. In tight spaces we take it down piece by piece and lower it on ropes rather than felling it in one go. See tree removal.
  • Stump grinding, so the space can go back to lawn, patio or planting. See stump grinding.

Working at height in tight spaces is what we do every day. In October 2026, KentOnline covered Connor climbing a 50ft sycamore at Maidstone’s Army barracks to rescue a cat that the fire service hadn’t been able to reach.

Hedges and boundaries

Many estate gardens are divided by fast-growing conifer, laurel or privet hedges that were planted for quick privacy and are now much taller than anyone intended. Regular hedge trimming and shaping keeps them neat and in proportion. If a hedge is beyond saving, hedge removal clears it, roots and all, ready for a fence or new planting. We plan hedge work around nesting birds. See when to cut hedges to avoid nesting birds.

Grove Green Conservation Area and TPOs

Grove Green has its own conservation area on Maidstone Borough Council’s list, designated in 1971. It’s a small area around the older buildings of the original hamlet, including the Grade II listed Grove Green Cottage, a house dating from the 15th or 16th century. Most of the estate’s housing sits outside it, but if you live in or next to it, the rules matter:

  • In the conservation area, any tree with a stem over 75mm in diameter at 1.5m above ground is protected. You must give Maidstone Borough Council six weeks’ notice before pruning or removing it.
  • Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). Outside the conservation area, trees can still be protected by a TPO, and public records show TPOs in and around Grove Green. Work on a TPO tree needs the council’s consent, which can take up to eight weeks.

Grove Green was built around surviving woodland and established trees, so it’s always worth checking before you cut. The council’s online map shows whether a tree is protected, or we can check for you when we quote. Our guide Do I need permission to cut down a tree in Maidstone? covers the details.

Frequently asked questions

Is my house in the Grove Green Conservation Area?

Probably not. The conservation area is small and covers the old hamlet buildings rather than the whole estate. Check Maidstone Borough Council’s conservation area map, or ask us and we’ll check before we quote.

Can you reduce a big tree rather than remove it?

Usually, yes. A crown reduction or thinning can make a mature tree smaller, lighter and safer while keeping it as a feature. It’s often the better choice, and it’s more likely to be approved if the tree is protected.

Can you work in a small garden with only side access?

Yes. We regularly work in tight gardens. We take trees down in sections where space is tight, and we’ll check access at the quote stage so there are no surprises on the day.

Who do I contact about trees on shared or public land?

Trees on communal areas are usually the responsibility of the landowner or management company. Trees on council land are the council’s responsibility. We can work for management companies and residents’ groups on shared land with the owner’s agreement.
